Life in the Arctic Diorama project
Art At Home: Life in the Arctic
This month we are looking at life in the Arctic. We will be learning about the landscape, the environment and the people and wildlife that live there.
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Design a diorama which shows what life in like in the Arctic.
A diorama is a miniature scene in a box. This example of a diorama is made using a shoebox and is designed to show an underwater scene. This website gives instructions and tips on how you can build a diorama: http://www.wikihow.com/Make-a-Diorama
----------------------------------------------------------------------You can use a wide variety of materials to make your diorama and be as creative as you like with the scene, background, objects, characters…etc. It can be based on modern life in the Arctic or life in the past.
Before you start it is a good idea to learn a little bit about Life in the Arctic. You can use books, pictures, videos, or websites. This blog has lots of useful links to tell you about life in the Arctic.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Things to think about:
· Where can I find out information about the Arctic and the Inuit people?
· What do I want to include in my diorama?
· What materials do I have available?
· How do I know if I have done a good job?
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
The project is due in on Monday 30th January.

An Inuit View of Life in the Arctic
Russell Atagootak is the the Inuit guide on the Catlin Arctic Survey. Having grown up in the northern Canadian town of Resolute Bay, Atagootak brings with him an understanding of how to survive in these harsh conditions, and how to avoid some of the dangers - including an encounter with a polar bear
See can you find the answers to these questions while watching the video:
- What jobs does Russell do in the Arctic?
- What language does he speak?
- What weapons did they use in the old days to hunt?
- What did he learn from the camp?
- What does he hope to do in the future?
- What is the best lesson he has learned in the Arctic?
